Uno a Uno is the workshop that Ipercubo is proposing for the "Hot in the Cave" program. The collective invites local residents, friends, or anyone passing by to create a collective map of Piazza de Gasperi. Each participant will be given large sheets of paper and pencils to draw their own section of the square. At the end, all the fragments will be combined to form a large map: a fragmented 1:1 scale mapping that can encompass images, desires, attention, views, and ideas of those who live in or happen upon this space daily.
Creating a 1:1 scale map, as large as the area it represents, is an impossible and paradoxical task. It would result in an oversized sheet of paper that we would have to lay over the space itself, inevitably becoming stained, torn, and eventually disappearing.
What if the map was not just a scaled-down representation of the space we live in but also an absorbent or dust cloth, a tracing paper, a protective film? What if our map folded around the edges and corners to capture the dirt, the dampness of the ground, or the green of the grass? And what if, with the help of a pencil, we transferred the shapes and surfaces of the asphalts, manhole covers, and tree trunks onto the paper?
We would have a completely different map. No longer a rigid representation, made of codes and rules, but a partial and inaccurate map that, precisely because of this, can faithfully adhere to the space it proposes to depict, without ever betraying its uniqueness.
